v1.0, finally.

I was about to upload a v0.11, and thought that perhaps it was about time to move on to other projects. It was time to rename that v1.0 instead.

It's not that I'm done with Ventureborn with this release -- far from it! For versions v0.1 to v0.9, I thought it was fantastic. Especially the character tables, those are fun. With the changes introduced in v0.10, it felt like the game was almost done.

  1. I had departed sufficiently from Into The Odd / Knave / Cairn to make this something... useful, or good. Those most excellent games are already there, and people could play them.
  2. This now supports how I most like to play: not as much inventory management, however fun that is, and more narrative-style play. A bit of Fate, a bit of Cortex perhaps. More new school and less OSR. I kept inventory management as optional rules, of course.

All the tinkering between v0.10 and v0.11 v1.0 felt almost insignificant. I was adding tiny touches on a painting, touches that perhaps only I would notice, and it was time to move on.

So what's next from here?

Personally, I'd like to move to open source layout software, so maybe that could be a future update... The typefaces are already open source and the art is public domain stuff. We'll see! I do enjoy learning to use new software, but that would take up my hobby time of playing/reading/writing instead.

In a dream world, I'd be able to pay for some illustrations, but that might mean charging for the game. Perhaps for "spin-off" standalone games that use Ventureborn rules? I'm not sure... I have mixed feelings about asking for payment when I myself am not able to afford paying for a lot of others' games. I'm extremely nitpicky about how something looks. Games (that I make, at least) shouldn't just be pretty, but also easy to read and use at the table. I think it looks decent despite the lack of illustrations, and I hope you do too!

If anyone would like to give feedback, comments, etc., please do!
